Start Early: Ukulele Christmas Songbook

It's barely October, but I'm sure there are already stores decorated for the December holidays! I think I need to start practicing now with the Vancouver Ukulele Circle Winter Holiday Songbook. I discovered it too late last year!

It's free (one of my favorite f-words). Click here to download and enjoy.

Uke Players' Thoughts on Dating

What's the sexiest song to play when attempting to woo someone with a ukulele?
"Sensual Seduction" by Snoop Dogg. This is a hot song, but if you mess it up, it's hilarious, and humor is sexy.

What's the quickest way into a ukulele player's heart/pants?
Ask for lessons, of course.

What can ukulele playing teach us about sex and relationships?
People may find monogamy as limiting as having just four strings to play. But in both cases, with a little creativity, you can tap into a continual source of joy.

What can ukulele playing teach us about sex and relationships?
At the risk of stating the obvious: size doesn't matter.

Cigar-Box Uke

What was I thinking?! Monterey summers can be chilly and foggy, but I wore shorts and sunscreen to the 2007 Polynesian Festival aka Spam Jam. I ended up buying a fleece shawl, blue with a hibiscus print, and shivering like everyone else. And it was bizarre to see large Samoan men in what I perceive to be colorful skirts walking around in the fog.

I got a $5 discount on my admission for bringing a can of Spam to be donated to the Food Bank and I got a code to download an free hour's worth of Hawaiian music, traditional and contemporary, from an Internet radio station. I had a great time.

There were booths with the food, services, and art you would expect, and the entertainment was fabulous. Traditional music involving ukuleles and fabulous percussion as well as the reggae/Hawaiian hybrid. And lots of dancing: graceful ladies and bold warriors. Hot, half-naked, dancing men. What's not to love?!

I chatted with this man, who had built a ukulele out of a cigar box. Sounded pretty good! Notice the "Uke" sticker on the ukulele case. Fun.

Ukuleles for Sanity

The website for Ukuleles for Sanity is sooooo well done. Great images, easy to navigate, humorous song parodies, free downloads . . . It’s just ingenious, even if you don’t agree with the point of view presented. This is funny stuff! Intelligence and creativity for a cause. I love that.

Click here to see what is now one of my favorite images, and/or read on for some quotes I've copied from the site. As a musician, I get a kick out of quote about expectations being low.

“And to those activist organizations that wish to create their own Ukuleles for Sanity group within their organization but don’t actually know any ukulele players, we say: 5 minutes. That’s how long it takes to learn a basic three-chord protest song on a ukulele. It doesn’t even matter how well you play it. It’s a ukulele. Expectations will be low. Novelty interest will be high. We think having your strings in tune helps, but it’s your call.”

“Weird times call for weird symbols, and we believe that the ukulele is the perfect symbol of empowerment in these times. We believe that this four-stringed underdog can be used to deliver a political statement that extends the artistic statement we already make when we perform on a uke. It’s a statement of hope and defiance and humor. Of unapologetic pride in being who we are. Of the belief that the smallest voice has its own special strength.”

“Ukuleles for Sanity. Providing all of your left-leaning ukulele political action needs!”
